Smoke Stack Windvane
Stuart Green
Title: Smoke Stack Windvane
Artist/s: Stuart Green
Year: 1991
Category: Sculpture
Site: Claisebrook Station
Location Details: South over the train stabling yard
Description:
For those with a keen eye, this windvane can be seen from platform level when looking south over the train stabling yard. Alternatively, a short stroll from the end of the walkway leads to a mild steel tower and copper formed stack. The work has at its top an aluminium form of exhaust gases that silently turns as a windvane.
Artist/s Statement:
One of the last items to be produced in the Midland Workshops, I worked with Westrail employees to develop a silent evocation of the dynamic energy of pressured exhaust leaving a steam locomotive stack. The work contrasts silence and portrayal of an energetic subject to evoke a sense of absence and memory of the steam sheds that once existed near by.
