In memory of Beeliar Wetlands

In memory of Beeliar Wetlands

Jennifer Dawson

Title: In memory of Beeliar Wetlands

Artist/s: Jennifer Dawson

Year: 2007

Category: Tiles/ Intergrated

Site: Cockburn Central Bus Station

Location Details:  Entrance and throughout the walls

Description:

Coloured and textured ceramic tiles have been fixed into purpose-made cavities in the bus shelters’ screen walls at the station entry

Artist/s Statement:

This series of works draws inspiration from the physical environment and the animal and plant inhabitants of the surrounding site. The images evolve from the extremities where the textures and shapes of the natural environment are abstracted and evolve into sharp focussed and detailed imagery as the traveller approaches the centre of the station. There is a whimsical, nostalgic element to the work, with representations of animals and plants that were once dominant in the environs but now are becoming endangered and threatened by the encroachment of human activity. The framed images of wild life and botanical form acts like a head stone or epitaph in a cemetery acknowledging the passing of yet another group of animal and plants to the relentless advancement of human expansion, and conquering of the natural environment.
