Have your say and give Transperth's new ferry an oar-some name

  • Transperth's third ferry currently under construction in Port Denison, Dongara
  • The $2.6 million vessel needs a name before it's launched for sea trials in December
  • Locals urged to submit their creative suggestions by October 31
  • Ferry McFerryFace and Boaty McBoatyFace will not be accepted

Transperth's newest ferry, locally manufactured in Port Denison, is getting its final touches and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti is inviting creatively-minded locals to get on board and give it an official name.

Transperth's third ferry - a $2.6 million, 148-seater vessel - will join the MV Shelley Taylor‑Smith (named for the long-distance swimmer) and the MV Phillip Pendal (the former member for South Perth) ferrying passengers between Elizabeth Quay and Mends Street Jetty.

After the new vessel is launched, all three ferries will be rotated through service, with the older Shelley Taylor-Smith to be predominantly used as a reserve and during special events.

At 23.7-metre-long and with a top speed of 16 knots, the next-generation ferry is faster and longer than its two predecessors and will have an on-board toilet, bike stowage area, wheelchair access and tinted windows - but it still needs the perfect name.

Name submissions can be made via the Transperth website, My Say Transport website, the Transperth InfoLine (13 62 13), Transperth Facebook, or in person in the suggestion boxes at any Transperth Info Centre.

Once submissions close at 5pm on October 31, the best names will be shortlisted and a winner picked.

The ferry will then receive its official name before undergoing sea trials in Port Denison in December, ahead of its launch on the Transperth network in early 2020.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The name selected for this new ferry will be seen by locals and tourists for decades to come, which is why it's important we pick something that reflects its important role in our transport network.

"This is the newest ferry on the public transport network in over a decade and has been built right here in WA by local workers.

"Last year there were more than 648,000 journeys on Transperth ferries, which consistently receives satisfaction ratings between 98 and 100 per cent in the annual Passenger Satisfaction Monitor.

"I'm calling on all Western Australians to get creative and submit their best name suggestions before October 31.

"Unfortunately Boaty McBoatface and Ferry McFerryface are already taken - so let's get more creative and choose an exciting new name for our new ferry (although Fremantle Dockers related names will be looked upon favourably)."
