What are we doing?
The PTA is planning the progressive removal of all vehicle level crossings across the metropolitan passenger rail network.
Removing level crossings is complex and requires significant investment. As such, these works need to be delivered in a progressive, prioritised way.
Prioritisation is determined based on ongoing monitoring and assessment of each crossing, including:
- Safety
- Risk-taking behaviour
- Levels of use
- Closure times
- Impacts on road congestion.
Following the completion of METRONET, there are now 18 vehicle level crossings remaining across the metropolitan rail network.
These crossings are currently in the early stages of assessment and prioritisation. Evidence-based recommendations are being developed for Government consideration in the medium term.
Why?
As part of the PTA’s long-term public transport strategy, we are committed to removing all at-grade level crossings across the metropolitan network to support a safer, more efficient transport system.
Benefit
Removing level crossings delivers significant benefits for the community and transport network, including:
- Improved safety: reduced risk of crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
- Better connectivity: smoother and more reliable movement for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.
- Reduced congestion: fewer delays at boom gates and less queuing on surrounding roads and footpaths.
- More reliable transport: minimised disruptions across both road and rail networks.
As Perth’s population grows and demand for both road and rail services increase, removing level crossings will help create a safer, more efficient, and better-connected city.
Timings
The removal of the remaining level crossings will be planned and delivered progressively, based on level of priority and government investment decisions.
Due to the scale and cost of delivering this program, the removal of the remaining level crossings may take many years to achieve.
