Urban Art Program
Graffiti is an ongoing and expensive problem faced not only by the PTA, but the entire community.
The PTA spends $3 million annually cleaning up after vandals who deface assets provided for the benefit of the whole community.
Our approach:
To address this issue, PTA Educate runs the Urban Art Program, launched in 2008 - a creative initiative that transforms graffiti hotspots into vibrant, legitimate works of art.
Participants learn the difference between vandalism and art, develop skills and create ‘ownership’ of the space – leaving their mark for benefit of the entire community for years to come.

Reward Card Program
To foster positive relationships between young people and Transit Officers (TO), PTA Educate runs the Reward Card Program - an initiative designed to encourage respectful and responsible behaviour on the public transport network.
During defined periods throughout the year, TOs hand out small bi-fold Reward Cards to young passengers who demonstrate positive behaviour while using the system. This simple gesture helps break down barriers, build mutual respect, and open constructive communication channels between youth and TOs.
These simple gestures open communication channels, build trust, and change attitudes -shifting the focus from enforcement to engagement. It’s about creating a culture of mutual respect across the network.
Student Film Program
The PTA Educate Student Film Program empowers young people to share safety and respect messages through creative filmmaking. Designed for students who may be at risk of unsafe or anti-social behaviour around public transport, the program offers hands-on workshops led by a professional filmmaker. Participants learn to script, film, edit, and produce short films for social media, all centred on safety themes relevant to their daily lives.
The program is flexible, delivered in blocks of 4 - 6 weeks, and focuses on collaboration, role-play, and empathy. Students gain practical skills while subtly engaging with safety messaging - without feeling lectured. Past participants have praised the program for its impact, creativity, and ability to foster pride and focus.
Building Positive Connections with Transit Officers
TOs play a vital role in keeping our public transport network safe - but it can be a challenging job. For many young people, their first interaction with a TO happens when something goes wrong, which can lead to negative first impressions on both sides.
PTA Educate works to change that by creating opportunities for young people and TOs to connect through positive, engaging activities. These initiatives help break down barriers, build mutual respect, and foster better communication.
We’re always looking for new ways to strengthen these relationships. If you have an idea for involving TOs in a community activity, we’d love to hear from you! Contact us at education@pta.wa.gov.au.
