Untitled - Maylands Station

Paul O’Connor

Title: Untitled - Maylands Station

Artist/s: Paul O’Connor

Year: 2002

Category: Integrated/ Tiles

Site: Maylands Station

Location Details: Whatley Crescent entrance to the underpass

Description:

Two pieces – the first above the Whatley Crescent entrance to the underpass into the station, where 300x300mm cut stainless steel panels are fixed to the underpass entrance and read Maylands in Braille. A number of glazed ceramic tiles are fixed randomly into the 1m high underpass on ramps, each tile representing a letter of the alphabet in Braille.

Artist/s Statement:

The idea of the Braille artworks was to recognise the history of the Blind Institute in Maylands. The inspiration came from time spent in Tokyo on an Australia Council residence in 2000 – train stations on the Circle Line all have Braille inserted in the handrails to direct sight-impaired passengers.

The PTA acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises  the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.
