Retro Roots & Suburban Boots

Haylee Fieldes

Title: Retro Roots & Suburban Boots

Artist/s: Haylee Fieldes (Fieldey)

Year: 2025

Category: Mural

Site: Whitfords Station

Location Details: Eastern bridge abutment under Whitfords Avenue, between northern and southerns station car parks.

Artist/s Statement:

My work celebrates the working-class roots of the northern suburbs from the 1970s to the 1990s, drawing inspiration from classic car culture and nostalgic icons of suburban life. Through references like the Binishell dome, milk deliveries, horse-shoe rolls, the drive-in cinema, Ugg boots, Aussie dogs, playground swings, and vintage hairstyles, I aim to evoke the collective memories of a bygone era. This mural captures the playful, carefree spirit of the area, reflecting a relaxed suburban lifestyle. The color palette is a retro yet contemporary nod to the Main Roads scheme, blending elements from both the Hepburn to Whitfords and Whitfords to Ocean Reef palettes. A vibrant pink ties the composition together, adding a modern, fun twist to the design.
