Rain on Water

Geoffrey Drake-Brockman

Title: Rain on Water

Artist/s: Geoffrey Drake-Brockman

Year: 2014

Category: Integrated

Site: Butler Station

Location Details: Concourse Level

Description:

A relief sculpture frieze along the full 40m width of the concourse are 1,200 aluminium rods of varying lengths mounted on a mirror-polished backing board. Each rod is topped with a brightly coloured square end-cap. Rain on Water is based on the action of ripples from raindrops propagating across a still water surface. This work represents the natural phenomena of raindrops falling on water, while drawing on mathematical modelling of waveforms, and extrapolating wave profiles into “colour space”. The artist wrote a computer algorithm to model the artwork’s form. The colour of the end-cap of each rod is in turn determined by its length; shorter rods are at the cool, blue end of the colour spectrum, while longer rods are at the warm or red end of the spectrum.
