Djinanginy kaartdjin, Yaakanap 'Seeing and Understanding place of the long neck turtle'

Sioux Tempestt and Seantelle Walsh

Title: Djinanginy kaartdjin, Yaakanap ' Seeing and Understanding place of the long neck turtle'

Artist/s: Sioux Tempestt and Seantelle Walsh

Year: 2023

Site: Lakelands Station

Location Detail: Artwork is applied to the wall flanking the western platform inside the station and also to paving at the main station entry from the bus interchange.

Medium: Sandblasted designs and exterior paint

Description:

The Noongar place name for Lakelands is Yaakanap ‘Place of the Yaakan (turtle)’. The contemporary artwork contains a discovery trail of abstracted shapes and forms representing themes of dek & barna (flora & fauna); kep (water); biddi (path); Waangaamaap Bilya (Serpentine River) and kuljak/marlee (black swan).

The concept was developed through collaborative workshops held at Winjan Aboriginal Community Hall with the Local Noongar Reference Group, and local Bindjareb artists, with contributions from a Lakelands Primary School Year 6 class.

The artwork is an important acknowledgement of Aboriginal people and their deep connection with the site.

With special thanks to the Local Noongar Reference Group (Frank Nannup, George Walley, Ricky Ugle and Elsie Ugle) and Bindjareb Artists (Lesley Pickett and Gloria Kearing).

The PTA acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises  the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this site may contain images or names of people who are deceased.
