Alkimos/Kyeelup

Chris Nixon

Title: Alkimos/Kyeelup

Artist/s: Chris Nixon

Year: 2023

Site: Alkimos Station

Location Detail: Artwork is applied to walls flanking each platform.

Medium: Acrylic paint and Signex panels

Description:

Chris Nixon’s artwork combines a mural treatment with shallow relief sculptural panels reflecting the natural landscape and the newly developed site. The artwork, mirrored across the two platforms, represents the ocean and the coast. Lines echoing local Melaleuca create swell lines to serve as a reflection of the coast, like waves washing up onto the shore. These lines are abstractions, coalescing to form the lettering of Alkimos – a nod to the famous wreck emerging from the sea.

The other platform also reflects Alkimos – connecting the past, present and deep Aboriginal connection to country, represented by the prevailing winds forming lines across the sand dunes, weaving through the letters to form the Noongar place name of Kyleeup ‘Place of the Kylee (Boomerang)’.

The PTA acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises  the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this site may contain images or names of people who are deceased.
