Public transport boost for major Subiaco Oval events

22/10/06

Tickets for AFL games at Subiaco Oval next year will include the price of public transport to and from Subiaco Oval.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the WA Football Commission and the Public Transport Authority (PTA) had reached an agreement which should reduce game-day traffic and parking problems.

“This joint-ticketing agreement is aimed at encouraging people to take public transport rather than driving to Subiaco Oval for major events,” Ms MacTiernan said.

To accommodate the anticipated increase in patrons, the Minister also announced a major upgrade of West Leederville train station, which would cater for fans travelling on the new Southern Suburbs Railway as well.

“This upgrade will give the station the capacity to cater for 20,000 patrons in the one-hour peak following sporting events such as AFL matches and Super 14 rugby,” Ms MacTiernan said.

“Last summer, the PTA extended the Fremantle-to-Perth platform to take a six-car train, and built a new siding for a train to ‘park’ ready for use at busy periods.

“This boosted the station’s capacity from 12,000 to 15,000 passengers and benefited patrons travelling to the city.

“The latest work will see an additional platform being built at the siding to make a loop, which will allow more people to travel in both directions, to the city and to Fremantle.

“Not only does this third platform mean faster dispersal of special event patrons, but it will also reduce transfer times at Perth Station by enabling Transperth to drop passengers at the right platform for their remaining journey home.”

Works included extending the Perth to Fremantle platform at West Leederville to 150m.

A turnback facility would be built at Daglish station to allow trains to park temporarily before returning to West Leederville to pick up more passengers.
