Perth platforms to close as Perth City Link steps up

Perth Station’s Platforms 6 and 7 will close next month as the project to sink the railway gathers pace.

Though the Public Transport Authority started preparatory work for the Perth City Link – Rail Project some time ago, this is the first tangible impact on passengers.

From December 5 until the middle of next year, the eastern end of the centre “island” platform – which services the Fremantle and Armadale Lines – will be closed for upgrades as part of the project’s forward works.  The upgrade will extend Platform 6/7 under the Eastern Concourse with new flooring, ceilings and lighting.

While the work is taking place, Fremantle Line services will move from Platform 7 to Platform 8, at the western end of the island platform.  Armadale C# services, currently leaving from Platform 6, will also relocate west, next to Platform 8.

During this time, there will be no access to Fremantle and Armadale C# services from the Eastern Concourse.  The wooden footbridge, near the Horseshoe Bridge, will still be in place.

A new walkway, at the western end of Perth Station, will provide access for people with disabilities, seniors and parents with prams, and young children.

The Platform 6/7 upgrade ensures that 150m of operating platform will remain when the platforms west of the Horseshoe Bridge are demolished as part of the Perth City Link Project.

This work is one of many projects – with a total value of $600 million – the PTA is undertaking as it sinks the railway and puts the adjoining bus station underground to set the stage for the main Perth City Link Project, due to begin next year.

The Perth City Link Project, supported by three tiers of Government and jointly undertaken with the East Perth Redevelopment Agency, will connect the CBD and Northbridge for the first time in more than 100 years and create a vibrant mix of transit, commercial, retail and open space zones in the heart of Perth.

The rail project is scheduled for completion by 2014 and the bus project by 2016. For more information on the project, visit www.perthcitylink.wa.gov.au.

Passengers are encouraged to keep informed on service disruptions by registering at www.transperth.wa.gov.au for Transperth’s free TravelEasy email updates.
