Artist/s Statement:

This artwork responds to the industrial heritage of the Midland Railway Workshops, reflecting the collaboration and technical expertise that defined the Workshops over generations.

The central sphere references the large, pressed forms once produced on site. The perforations evoke fire and steam, the forces that powered the engines and drove progress. From this core, sculptural seating flows outward, resembling railway lines traversing the State and echoing the routes that transported goods and passengers across Western Australia. Together, these elements invite reflection on the Workshops’ lasting contribution to the region’s development. During the day, the forms encourage rest and social interaction; at night, the illuminated sphere serves as a welcoming point of arrival.

Neil Turner is an internationally respected artist and master craftsman who creates highly complex turned sculptures and furniture from native Australian timber, steel and other materials.
