In November, the Perth City Link Rail Alliance will begin work on Platform 5 in Perth Station to:
All access to train services, lifts and escalators will remain during the work.
During the work, a temporary platform-level walkway, connecting Platform 5 to Platform 6/7 will be installed to manage passenger movement (see Map). The walkway will be removed when this work is completed in mid-January 2012.This work allows construction of a new pedestrian underpass to begin in early 2012. When completed, the new pedestrian underpass will connect all platforms to Perth Station.
The heritage-listed timber footbridge must be removed to allow a new pedestrian underpass to be built in Perth Station. The new underpass will be located where the footbridge currently sits and will connect all platforms to Perth Underground.Special care will be taken to remove, record and safely store each part of the footbridge at the Public Transport Authority's Welshpool compound. The footbridge will be rebuilt when a final location is confirmed.
The new Platform 5 stairs will improve passenger movement around Perth Station. While the stairs are being built, access to the lift, escalators and Platform 3 and 4 will remain. The final stair design, with openings on both sides of the stairs (see image below), meets Australian design standards and provides optimum space for passengers to connect between Platform 3,4 and 5 by allowing passengers more room to move around the lift and stairs.
