Transport Portfolio

The Transport Portfolio isn’t just about trains, buses, roads, boats and planes.

It’s about people.

People who need to get to work, home and everywhere in between, and businesses that rely on road, rail, air and sea to deliver billions of dollars in goods and services each year.

An integrated and optimised transport network will give the Western Australian community more choice and improve the quality of our lives and our environment.

Since 2010, WA’s three key transport agencies – The Public Transport Authority, the Department of Transport and Main Roads - have worked together to enhance the coordination of operations and develop unified policies and regulatory functions.

Each agency has different responsibilities and together we strive to provide world-class outcomes for our customers, all Western Australians (as well as visitors to our State), through integrated and intelligent transport systems and services.

Transport @ 3.5 Million

The State Government's Transport @ 3.5 Million sets the vision for a generational change to Perth and Peel’s transport network.

It provides a long term plan for transport infrastructure and considers how we can use the transport network more efficiently as the population approaches 3.5 million and beyond.

The plan looks at where people will live and work in the future and outlines a flexible transport system so that people and freight can keep moving as the city grows.

Smart transport

We all have things that we love about living in Perth.

These things are harder to enjoy as traffic and congestion increases.

The Transport portfolio is investing billions across a range of road, public transport, cycling and walking initiatives to help manage congestion and make it easier for everyone to get around.

But we need help from the community to help us to keep Perth moving.

Small changes from all of us will add up to make a big difference, whether that’s:

  • Leaving for work a little earlier (or later) than the herd
  • Planning your journey ahead of time to avoid heavily congested areas
  • Car-pooling with friends or colleagues
  • Catching an extra bus or train each week when you can.

There are things businesses can do as well; offering flexible working hours, providing staff with public transport passes instead of parking spots or offering workplace shower and change facilities.

The Smart Transport website is a central point of information providing the tips, tools and resources that will help you to identify the small changes you can make.

Smart Transport is set to improve the way we all get around and with your help, we can all travel a little better.

Portfolio agencies

The Public Transport Authority

On the public transport front, we continually plan and follow through on WA's public transport priorities which have contributed to our system being recognised as the best in the country.

We are responsible for providing customer-focussed, safe and cost-effective passenger transport services such as:

  • Rail, bus and ferry services in the metropolitan area (Transperth).
  • Public transport services in regional centres.
  • Coach and rail passenger services to regional areas (Transwa).
  • School bus services.
  • Designing, building and maintaining transport infrastructure.

Main Roads WA

Representing one of the world's most expansive road networks, Main Roads is committed to working cooperatively and productively across all levels of government, to ensure our road network meets the needs of the community, industry and stakeholders.

Main Roads is responsible for the delivery and management of a safe and efficient main road network in WA through operations including:

  • Building the State’s major Government road infrastructure projects.
  • Providing infrastructure that creates a safe environment for all road users.
  • Providing infrastructure and operations that improve road efficiency resulting in improvements in traffic and freight  levels of service.
  • Maintaining the State’s major Government roads, bridges, verges and reserves.
  • Using technology to optimise the real-time management of the network and provide traveller information.
  • Improving community amenity through the development of roadside stopping places, the incorporation of public art into infrastructure, and understanding the needs of all transport users.

Department of Transport

The Department of Transport’s key focus is on delivering a range of transport services and strategic transport planning and policy across the range of public and commercial transport systems that service WA.

The Department coordinates and prioritises the transport-related infrastructure that allows our economy to grow, planning to connect people with goods and services through an intricate system of roads, railways, airports, ports and waterways as well as educating and regulating those networks to keep Western Australians safe.

Their services include:

  • Providing driver and vehicle services (licensing).
  • Regulating the Western Australian on-demand transport industry.
  • Managing marine safety, coastal protection and facilities.
  • State-wide transport planning.
