With TBM Grace's journey well underway, and TBM Sandy set to start tunnelling later this month, activity across all sites is ramping up.

October 2017 update

The slurry, grout, and water treatment plants at the Forrestfield construction site continue to support TBM operations, while works to realign Dundas Road will also begin later this month.

Meanwhile, excavation of Airport Central's station box is ongoing, d-wall production at Belmont is progressing well, and works to temporarily realign the Midland Line at Bayswater will begin in coming weeks.

TBM Grace 500m closer to Bayswater

TBM Grace has now travelled more than 500 metres from her launch site at the future Forrestfield Station.

With a team of up to 18 people operating her 24 hours a day, Grace has so far installed 330 of the 4500 rings needed to complete her tunnel to Bayswater.

She is currently installing an average of 13 rings (just over 20 metres) per day.

Changes at Forrestfield site

The Forrestfield construction site is now a 24/7 operation as it supports TBM Grace (through the slurry separation, grout, and water treatment plants) and prepares for TBM Sandy's launch this month.

Works will also soon begin to realign Dundas Road, from Berkshire Road to a point between Maida Vale Road and Poison Gully Creek. Dundas Road will remain open until the realignment is complete, and the majority of the one-kilometre realignment will be conducted without impacting traffic.

Airport Central Station works ramp up

Works at the future Airport Central Station site are ramping up, with less than six months to go before TBM Grace's arrival.

Excavation of the underground station box is now 25 per cent complete, with excavation to concourse level on the eastern side of the box almost finished, and construction of concourse beams underway. The concrete ground slab for the box structure has also been poured.

The next few months will focus on excavating the remainder of the station box ready to for TBM Grace in early 2018.  

Belmont site continues to dig in

Diaphragm walls, or d-walls, which will create the underground station box for Belmont Station, are now more than 40 percent complete. Once finished, around November, the soil within the structure will be excavated in preparation for the base slab.

Construction of a tunnel cross passage (to allow entry/exit between the two tunnels) will begin in mid-October. Enabling works and site establishment will take place on Brearley Avenue, near the intersection of First Street from next week.

Bayswater Junction site establishment

Installation of track for the temporary realignment of the Midland Line will begin in coming weeks. A  500m-long retaining wall has been built adjacent to Railway Parade to support the temporary line and allow more space within the rail reserve for construction of the Bayswater Junction. The temporary line will be finished later this year.

Bayswater Junction (the portal where trains will enter and exit the tunnels) will be built on land bordered by Guildford Road, Newton Street and Tonkin Highway. Some clearing has already been done in the area and the site compound will be established this month.

An area along Guildford Road, adjacent to the construction site will be developed in coming weeks to create a temporary path linking cyclists and pedestrians from Guildford Road to Whatley Crescent.
