Right Track seeks to engage with young people through programs that work to their interests and offer a collaborative way to build skills and impart targeted safety messages. Through youth consultation it was identified that there was a desire for a program which uses film to involve young people in messages of safety and respect.
The Student Film program was created to engage students who may be at-risk of engaging in anti-social or dangerous behaviour around the public transport network. It offers students the opportunity to learn from a professional filmmaker and up-skills participants in filmmaking techniques in order to film, edit and produce short form films to be used on social media. The films will be based around a safety theme, encouraging students to identify issues and workshop solutions relating to their everyday life.
The program delivery is flexible and adaptable to the needs of the students. Previously it has been delivered in four, five, or six week blocks dependent on the time available.
“Thank you again for providing such an enriching experience for our students, I can’t tell you how amazing it was to watch the students during the filming stages and the sense of pride and focus they showed. It’s just not something we can replicate in school.” – Arts/Media Coordinator, Governor Stirling
“During the course of the workshops, the students were subtly exposed to safety messaging, giving them an overarching respect for the power of trains and the harsh realities of the dangers of rail trespass, without ever feeling like they were receiving overt messaging or a lecture.
Role-play and empathy formed a key aspect of the program culminating in acting on location, sometimes alongside real transit officers, which really helped to change any perception of themselves as somehow apart from or not affected by the issues.” - Film workshop facilitator
