Transperth Education has been involved with Safety in Schools Week since its inception in 1999 and this year is no exception.
‘Safety in Schools’ is an annual school safety awareness event which aims to provide WA primary schools and the wider community with a week to focus on injury prevention. ‘Think Smart, Stay Safe’ is the theme for this years ‘Safety in Schools Week’, and encourages teachers and students to be active but also to be aware of hazards that could result in injuries to children.
We have again contributed a lesson plan, to the online resource kit, called ‘Steps to a Safer Journey’. The lesson plan focuses on pedestrian safety around buses and the key message ‘Wait before you walk’, in particular what distractions a students may face, the risks they may pose and how to avoid them. The Transperth lesson plan is available to download from www.kidsafewa.com.au.
Transperth Education will also again be involved in the Safety in Schools Week launch day on Friday 26th September. This year the launch will take place at Karrinyup Primary School and while the event is only for their students, there are other great ideas about how to get your school involved in the week listed on the KidSafe WA website. One great activity is the to get involved in is the ‘Get Creative About Safety’ Competition with fantastic prizes up for grabs!
While October is Community Safety month, it’s never too early to get thinking about how your school can get involved. Community Safety Month is coordinated by ICCWA and you can find out more information by visiting their website www.iccwa.org.au. You’ll be able to catch the Transperth Education team and their Transperth bus spreading the bus safety message at the’ Little Hands Festival’, coordinated by the City of Melville.
