The young people at Kelmscott Senior High School learnt all about public transport safety last week when they had a visit from PTA (Public Transport Authorities) Transit Officers and Swan Transit Bus Drivers.
Speaking to more than 240 year 7 students across two days, the Right Track program was able to make sure that the young people were educated not only on the consequences of incidents such as graffiti, fare evasion and rock throwing but also on the zone system and how to use their smart rider cards.
The students had plenty of questions for the Transits Officers and Bus Drivers too. They were particularly interested in how they can top up their smart rider card, how much it costs to replace a smashed bus window and who pays for damage to public transport property – the answer by the way is that it costs anywhere between $600 - $1200 to replace just one window and it’s the tax payer who pays! This gave them something to think about next time their peers consider doing the wrong thing.
The students now know all about why they should be responsible for their own safety and why it is so important to do the right thing around the public transport network.
