With only months to go until the new Butler Extension is in operation, the Transperth Education Team and Right Track combined our efforts to ensure that all students throughout the area were aware of the risks associated with our trains.
Approximately 2000 students were part of the ‘Don’t Get Zapped’ safety campaign with presentations from Right Track’s Jonathan Beninca and Transperth Education’s David McMahon with a key goal in getting students to think about possible consequences.
David McMahon is concerned that some students do not understand the seriousness of the consequences. “Unfortunately some students don’t always realise the serious life changing consequences that can occur when they take a risk; anywhere from simply crossing the road to possibly retrieving a ball from the train track it all involves a certain element of risk”
“With 25,000 volts pulsing through the overhead wires, trains that travel at up to 130km/h and taking up to two and half times the length of Patterson Stadium to come to a stop; with consequences of serious injury or possible death, playing around train tracks is just not worth that risk.”
With rail safety ambassador and double amputee Jonathan Beninca presenting to the local High Schools and Transperth education officer David McMahon presenting to the local primary schools, we hope that this very important safety message is able to carry through the community for many years to come.
