Doing the right thing will make a big difference to your safety this Christmas

Doing the right thing will make a big difference to your safety this Christmas

Friday, 18 December 2015

Christmas is a time for giving, and with Santa’s big day just around the corner, there’s a lot to like about the festive season.

But whether you’re locking up your shiny bike or glued to your new phone while you wait on the platform, there’s a few things you should remember to ensure you and others stay safe on and around the network.

If you’re rocking new headphones or an mp3 player, it can be easy to zone out of your surroundings. Stay safe and stay in the moment when you’re on the train platform, the pedestrian crossing or walking through the bus station – turn your music down, take your headphones off for a bit, or look up from your phone when you’re doing stuff like getting on the train or crossing the road.

If you drop your phone on the tracks – never jump down from a platform to get it. That’s what our transit officers are there for. Just ask your nearest transit officer or Transperth staff member for help, or if there’s no-one around, press the red ‘emergency’ button near the ticket machines and we’ll send someone to help you get it back safely.

A new skateboard or bike can be an awesome present to help you get around, but there are things to remember – make sure you buy a good lock, like a D-lock, and register your SmartRider for access to our secure cycling lockers and shelters. Remember, bikes are welcome on trains outside of peak times, but they aren’t allowed at the three city stations during morning and afternoon peak times, inbound trains during the morning peak, and outbound trains during the afternoon peak.  Be sure to hold on to your bike while you’re travelling with it, to ensure it doesn’t fall over, and avoid blocking the entrances with your ride. Also be sure to walk – not ride – your bike whenever you’re on Transperth property, particularly on train platforms.

Finally, remember to look after your belongings, keep them close and never leave a bag unattended. If you lose something on our network, just ring the Transperth InfoLine on 13 62 13, we’ve got a register of all lost property that gets handed in, and we’ll do our best to get it back to you.

They’re small things, but they make a big difference to your safety, the safety of others, and your awesome new Christmas presents.

Merry Christmas from Right Track!
