Community Safety Month - that's a wrap!

Community Safety Month - that's a wrap!

Monday, 3 November 2014

Last week marked the end of Injury Council of Western Australia (ICCWA)’s Community Safety Month, highlighting the importance of creating safer spaces to live, work and play.

Every October across WA, Community Safety Month encourages local communities to get involved in a number of free safety to raise awareness of injury and accident prevention.

To help celebrate the month, PTA was involved through its Right Track and Transperth Education programs.

Right Track offered a taste of its Urban Art program at the City of Armadale’s Community Safety Day, held on Sunday October 19 at Minnawarra Park in Armadale. Despite the wild weather, a number of young people tried their hand at aerosol art on the Right Track’s giant jigsaw puzzle and learnt a valuable anti-graffiti message from an experienced street artist. Feedback from the event was positive, with many people listing the Right Track stall as their favourite activity of the day!

To increase the awareness of safety amongst the youngest in our community, Transperth Education attended two safety festivals to spread the word; the City of Melville’s “Little Hands” Festival and the City of Rockingham’s Safety and Family Expo.

To appeal to the children, the Transperth bus took on a dinosaur theme, with green ‘vines’, prehistoric foot prints, realistic sound effects and dinosaur eggs throughout. Once the children got over the roars from within and the fear that the dinosaur could very well still be on the bus, they completed a bus safety quiz with the information found inside the eggs.

The weather kept many away but for those brave enough to bare the elements, a fun day was had by all, especially the one child that yelled to his mother across the park “this is the best bus I’ve ever been on!”
