Are you prepared for the consequences of fare evasion?

Are you prepared for the consequences of fare evasion?

Friday, 22 August 2014

Did you know that getting the train without a valid ticket could see you being issued with a maximum fine of $500? Did you also know that if you avoid paying this fine you could also have your driver’s licence suspended or withheld, and may even have to re-sit your driver’s test!

Travelling on Transperth services without a valid ticket can be a very costly mistake to make. Under the Public Transport Authority Regulations 2003, fines can be issued to anyone who is travelling on the Transperth network without a valid ticket.

The maximum price of a concession ticket is less than $5 (the equivalent of a cup of coffee), however if you are caught without a valid ticket it could end up costing you up to $500!

Many people don’t realise this but if you avoid paying your fine you could have your driver’s licence suspended, and if you’re on your P plates, you will have to sit your driver’s test again.

This also applies to people who don’t have a licence yet, as not paying your fines will prevent you from being able to apply for your driver’s licence!

To avoid these consequences, make sure you have a valid ticket before catching the train or bus. For more information on the penalties of not having a valid ticket, please read here.
