And the Community Hero award goes to...
Monday, 22 December 2014
It’s easy to think of heroes as fictional characters straight out of the latest Hollywood blockbuster, but three Public Transport Authority transit officers have proven there’s nothing fake about their dedication to keeping people safe.
In March 2014, transit officers Challis Bick, Piers McCarney and Mark Jennings received the call all PTA staff hope never comes – a teenage girl had been run over by a train at McIver Station.
With trains in the area stopped, the trio ran the 600m to where the girl had been hit and provided desperately-needed first aid and reassurance to the victim, who had both feet severed in the accident.
Challis, Piers and Mark’s heroism and life-saving quick-thinking was acknowledged when they were each presented with St John Ambulance’s Community Hero award in early December.
The annual awards acknowledge individuals who have displayed enormous courage, and exceptional judgement delivering critical first aid.
