7 reasons to become a Right Track certified teacher

7 reasons to become a Right Track certified teacher

Thursday, 21 May 2015

1.       Empowering students with the right (and wrong) ways to interact with public transport

The Public Transport Authority is committed to educating young passengers about the importance of acting safely and responsibly on public transport through our targeted education package – Right Track. Since 2006, Right Track has been teaching students about rail safety, including highlighting the importance of responsible behaviour around Perth’s public transport system. More than 100,000 students have engaged with Right Track since it was launched.

2.       The lessons they learn can be used throughout their lives

Rights and responsibilities are a core teaching point for Right Track, and the code of behaviour for public transport applies both in the classroom and outside of it. Right Track also teaches young people about the way their behaviour can impact on others – an important lesson to learn (and something they may not have thought about) as they mature.

3. Comprehensive teacher resources

The Right Track education program has a strong focus on visual learning and discussion based activities, and our teacher resource kit gives teachers an easy and concise way to teach students about their role by looking at the rights and responsibilities of all passengers. The teacher resource kit is designed to be used as a flexible teaching tool and the activities may be adapted for students' individual needs.

4.       National curriculum certified

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority has endorsed Right Track’s in-school education program.

5.       Engaging content

From DVDs (available on request) to engaging in-class exercises, there are a variety of interesting learning options for a variety of ages. Students can participate in games like Bus Station Bingo and Snakes and Ladders, find out more about Transperth staff and their roles, seek out potential risks on our colourful posters and explore how and why they should have a sense of pride and ownership of their public transport system. Interviews with staff and other supporting videos are also available online on our YouTube channel. Throughout the year, Right Track also engages directly with students across the metropolitan area with speakers like double-amputee Jonathan Beninca.

6.       Can be tailored to your class

There is a variety of additional teacher resources suitable for differing teaching needs. The Trains Move Faster Than You booklet focuses directly on pedestrian crossing safety for older students. Each year, on Perth's urban rail system hundreds of people trespass on to the tracks and cross dangerously close to trains. The TrackSAFE educational resources Be on the Safe Side were developed for mainstream students, with links to the national curriculum. Finally, Juvenile Justice Team resources, which were developed in conjunction with the Department of Corrective Services, can be adapted for those at-risk of engaging in track crime behaviour.
