James and Fitzgerald Street modifications
The major section of the Roe Street Bus Bridge has been constructed as part of the Perth Arena Project. The PTA is now undertaking works to connect the bus bridge to James Street. This will involve the introduction of a central bus lane on the western end of James Street and modifications to the traffic signals on the intersection of James and Fitzgerald Streets.
The new connection onto the bus bridge will provide a safer direct route from Fitzgerald Street to the Wellington Street Bus Station. It will also improve passenger travel times and reduce traffic congestion along the southern end of Fitzgerald and Roe streets. At present, Transperth buses travel along Fitzgerald Street onto Roe Street and cross the railway lines at a level crossing.
Work will begin in August 2010 with completion scheduled for late 2010. Prior to the work to install the bus lane, some minor works will be done to relocate underground services.
Approved traffic management systems will be in place for the duration of the work.
For more detail and maps showing the new road configuration please click here.
The PTA will review the new arrangements for three months after the work is complete. An independent road safety audit and consultation with local residents and business will be undertaken.
Prior to commencement of services on the new route, Transperth bus drivers will undertake a familiarisation program on the route including the bus bridge.

The Roe Street Bus Bridge opened on December 20, 2010.
