EDI-Rail Bombardier was awarded the contract for the supply and maintenance (for 15 years) of 31 state-of the-art three-car sets in May 2002.
The railcars were manufactured in Maryborough, Queensland.
Each three-car set can carry 560 passengers and is capable of speeds of up to 130kmh.
Before being officially accepted by PTA, the railcars underwent track tests for noise, ride quality, harmonics and multiple unit testing (i.e two three-car sets coupled together to make a six-car set).
Following the acceptance of the new railcars they commenced operating on the Joondalup Line.
The last of the 31 three-cars sets entered into service on 10 July 2006 ready for the start of services on the Mandurah Line.
