The PTA operates an integrated public transport system that provides road, rail and ferry services throughout Western Australia.

Bus services in the Perth metropolitan area

A fleet of more than 1354 buses service 289 standard routes and a further 309 school-bus routes. Three contractors provide these services under the Transperth banner:

  • Path Transit;
  • Swan Transit; and 
  • Transdev.

There were more than 83 million total bus boardings during the 2013-14 financial year.

Train services in the Perth metropolitan area

A fleet of 243 railcars makes more than 1045 trips each weekday between 70 stations spread across a rail network of more than 173km. The network comprises five lines:

  • Armadale/Thornlie;
  • Fremantle;
  • Joondalup;
  • Midland and;
  • Mandurah

These services are operated by PTA's Transperth Train Operations division. There were more than 63 million total rail boardings during the 2013-14 financial year.

Ferry services in the Perth metropolitan area

There are two ferries (the MV Phillip Pendal and the MV Shelley Taylor-Smith) which make 92 trips on an average weekday, September to April, and 60 trips on an average weekday, May to August.  The contract to operate these services for Transperth is held by Captain Cook Cruises. There were more than 435,000 total ferry boardings during the 2013-14 financial year.  

School bus services in regional WA

A fleet of contract buses provide services to some 27,000 students per school day. A total of 824 school buses service mainstream schools and 124 school buses service special education schools, centres and units.

Coach services in regional WA

Transwa road coaches service more than 275 regional WA locations spread across 29 routes. The network extends to Kalbarri, Geraldton and Meekatharra in the north, Augusta, Pemberton and Albany in the south-west and Esperance in the south-east. Transwa operates 144 separate coach services a week.

There were more than 197,000 Transwa coach boardings during the 2013-14 financial year.

Train services in regional WA

Transwa operates 62 scheduled rail services every week across four routes:

  • The Australind provides two daily return services between Perth and Bunbury.
  • The Prospector provides a daily return service between Perth and Kalgoorlie, and an additional service on Mondays and Fridays.
  • The AvonLink provides a weekday return service between Midland and Northam.
  • The MerredinLink operates between Perth and Merredin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

There were more than 219,000 Transwa rail boardings during the 2013-14 financial year.

Regional Town Bus Services

The PTA manages bus services in 14 major regional towns in country WA. Seven of the towns have intra-town bus services, while all 14 have town school bus services. In addition, the PTA also provides five inter-town services. There were more than 2.5 million total boardings during the 2013-14 financial year.
